The Black Rats is the collective nickname
for the Regiments and Units that form
the 4th Mechanized Brigade
The 4th Mechanized Brigade were formed during the Second World War in 1941, as an armoured brigade of the 7th Armoured Division.
The 7th Armoured Division had taken the nickname the Desert Rats, and adopted their famous emblem the red jerboa, after their tours of combat in the deserts of Egypt and North Africa during 1940.
The 4th Mechanized Brigade then subsequently adopted its own variation - the Black Rat emblem featuring a black jerboa - during their final push to expel the Axis forces from North Africa in April 1943.
