"Welcome to the Black Rat Fund website. The Fund has been established to provide welfare support to all members of 4 Mechanized Brigade, ‘The Black Rats’, and their immediate families. Throughout the Black Rats’ recent tour in Afghanistan, the Fund benefited from truly remarkable support from the local community, civilian and military, and that support is making a difference to people’s lives now.
I am enormously grateful to the many people who have given so generously to this Fund. There is still much work to be done as we support injured and fit soldiers and their families in these months following the recent tour of duty and we look towards our next deployment to Afghanistan in 2012.
The Fund remains open for business and donations are always greatly valued."

 The Black Rat Fund is the welfare fund for
4th Mechanized Brigade.
The promotion of 4th Mechanized Brigade by the provision of social and welfare support and other facilities for the efficiency and well being of Servicemen and Servicewomen and their immediate family, and to alleviate need, suffering and distress for Servicemen and Servicewomen and their immediate family by providing charitable assistance.
This means that the Black Rat Fund has a very simple mission: to support the serving personnel and the families of 4th Mechanized Brigade through a variety of means whenever they need our help.
How do we support you?
We provide support in a variety of ways...
- We can give welfare grants to individuals or families from 4th Mechanized Brigade that will assist you if you or a member of your immediate family are in need or distress.
- We can give grants to specific projects which benefit members and families from 4th Mechanized Brigade.
- We can put you in touch with other welfare agencies if you need specialist support or advice.

Charity Registration Number: The Black Rat Fund is currently an Excepted Charity as such does not hold a Charity Registration Number. However, we are still regulated and supervised by the Charity Commission, and comply with all the standards of practice that they require.

History
The 4th Mechanized Brigade is a British Army brigade formed during the Second World War in 1941, as an armoured brigade of the 7th Armoured Division. The brigade was reclassified as a mechanized brigade in December 2006, and is currently based in Catterick Garrison, England, forming part of the 3rd (UK) Armoured Division.
4th Mechanized Brigade is due to deploy to Helmand Province in 2012.
